Archaeology

Since prehistoric times, numerous traces of the presence of man in Puglia can be seen and visited in the many Archaeological Parks, in the Amphitheatres, and in underground sites present in the territory.
Not to be missed, is the Archeological Park of Egnazia: it includes several findings of the ancient town of Gnathia; the walls probably date back to the Messapian age while outside the walls there was the necropolis with many tombs of different centuries and rites. As much interesting as the previous site, is the Altamura Man: the fossilised skeleton of a man who lived in the middle to upper Pleistocene. His skeleton, whole and in excellent condition, can be seen at Lamalunga, a cave near Altamura.
Special findings from Magna Grecia period are kept in the Museums of Taranto and Ruvo di Puglia.
